❶ What is Customs Duty?
When importing goods, especially for wholesale business, in most cases, the buyer is responsible for paying the customs duty. Customs duty is levied by your country, not by us as the supplier. Please understand this fundamental point—we will not charge you any customs duty.
Customs duty is imposed based on the invoice value and the declared value of the goods. Therefore, the declared value is crucial.
Each country has its own customs duty policies; some countries have strict policies, while others are more lenient. For example, in Australia, for a long time, no customs duty has been imposed on goods worth several hundred US dollars.
It is recommended that you gain a detailed understanding of your country's customs duty policies before starting your wholesale import business.
❷ Customs Duty Information
No Customs Duty Applicable:
For relatively small packages with very low value, the customs authorities of your country will not impose customs duty on you.
Customs Duty Applicable:
Under normal circumstances, medium to large-sized packages will be subject to customs duty. Each batch of goods will be taxed at a certain rate. For example, if the invoice value of a package is shown as 1,000 US dollars and the customs duty rate is 25%, you will be required to pay 250 US dollars in customs duty.
❸ How to Pay Customs Duty?
Under normal circumstances:
Freight forwarders (international couriers such as DHL, FEDEX, UPS, etc.) will notify you in advance that there is a package to be signed for and that customs duty needs to be paid. Then the courier will ask you to pay the customs duty.
In case of cargo detention by customs:
In this situation, the customs authorities of your country consider there to be an issue with your goods and need to re-calculate the value of the goods before imposing customs duty on you. Generally, in such cases, the customs duty will be somewhat higher, and the procedures will be relatively complicated. You will need to handle this yourself or find a customs clearance company to deal with it.
As the seller, we will cooperate with you to prepare customs clearance documents. Usually, customs clearance documents include a product list, product invoice, payment voucher, chat records, etc.
Frequent Customs Detention
In some countries with strict credibility assessment systems, customs authorities will detain shipments regardless of their value—whether high or low—and require the payment of high customs duties. In such cases, the customs detention targets you as an individual rather than being limited to a single shipment.
❹Duty-Free Methods
There are also some special channels to help you be exempt from customs duties, namely double-clearance dedicated lines and Chinese freight forwarding companies that offer comprehensive services.
Double-Clearance Dedicated Lines
You don’t need to worry about customs clearance issues; you only need to pay the shipping fee. However, it has drawbacks: the shipping fee is relatively high, the transportation time is relatively long (15-20 days), and furthermore, double-clearance dedicated lines only cover certain specific regions (Europe, America, Russia, and the Middle East).
Chinese Freight Forwarding Companies with Comprehensive Services
Such freight forwarders have strong capabilities and can almost meet all your needs—for example, handling payments, customs clearance (and even helping you purchase other products)—with excellent service quality.
At the same time, as the supplier, we only need to deliver the goods to them. This is beneficial for both you and us as the supplier. The only drawback is that the shipping fee will be slightly higher.
